KKSA DENTAL SCREENING MAY 5th, 2017

The following message is sent on behalf of Toronto Public Health.  Please contact them with any questions or concerns you may have regarding dental screening.

Dr. Hazel Stewart

Director, Dental & Oral Health Services

Dr. Barbara Yaffe

Acting Medical Officer of Health

Dear Parent/Guardian: School Year 2016-17

Toronto Public Health (T.P.H.) provides dental programs to children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.

To identify children with oral health problems, a screening program is offered to students in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health requirements for mandatory health programs. The screening is an assessment by a dental hygienist using sterilized instruments. The dental hygienist will assess the need for topical fluoride, scaling, sealant and any other obvious dental needs.

As a follow up to the screening, only parents whose children are identified as requiring dental services will be notified. A note to that effect will be sent home with your child/ren for your information and action. You may also receive a phone call from T.P.H. dental staff to assist you in accessing care.

Please be advised that this screening assessment does not replace the dental examination done by a licensed dentist.

If you do not wish your child/ren to be screened, please send your child to school with a note.

For additional information, please contact us at the phone number listed above or visit us at http://www.toronto.ca/health/dental/children_youth.htm.

Thank you,

Capturing the Council Meeting: May 10, 2010

Dear Parents,
Here are some of the items discussed at our May Council meeting. Please be advised that this post does not contain all the subjects covered, and these are not the official minutes of the meeting. The minutes of our April 12 meeting are now posted and can be viewed here.

Mr. Gambacort made a great presentation regarding the Safe School Protocol that he will be developing in consultation with the school, students and parents. If you would like to participate, please contact Mr. Gambacort directly at Carl.Gambacort@tel.tdsb.on.ca or send us an email to artsparents@gmail.com. The first step in developing this protocol was a survey of the students at KKSA, which generated 162 responses regarding bullying. The data is still being analyzed and will be presented at a later date.

Ms. Pfeiffer presented the staffing model for next year. She has consulted with two parents during the process. Carolyn, and Susan M. represented the “new” Grade 7 and 8 parents. Next year will be very similar to this year with 8.5 teachers, and two 0.5 education assistant for special education. The timetable remains the same: school will start at 8:35 am, and finish at 2:55 pm. Smart Board technology will be embraced by our school, and perhaps the purchase of some additional smart board will be in store.

We will be losing Mr. Vilamil and Mr. Bates next year, and we wish all the best for both of them. We hope you will be back!

Mr. Bates spoke about the various involvement our students having in athletic tryouts and meets, soccer, etc. After our great Massey Hall concert, the ESA concerts are coming up, as well as the Year-End Concert.

Co-Chairs were happy to report the finishing of the By-law, which will go to a vote on June 14. Suggested By-law was sent out in an email; if you require a copy please let us know. Feedback should be given in writing. The Adela Award has received several nominations already.  A panel is composed of 3 parent members and 2 community members (teachers suggested by the Principal will make the final decision from all submissions). The Adela Award will be given out at the Graduation Ceremony on June 28th. Communication received high marks from parents regarding regular updates about school and TDSB, spending update, choir performance on the Blog, etc. Some information still needs to be sent home in hard copy. Money allocation from fundraising initiatives is a challenge, as this year council was faced with prior commitments. This year a Budget Committee will be struck, so there can be  flexibility with the proposed budget for next year’s Council. We  need some parents to attend one meeting! Please email artsparents@gmail.com if interested.

Fundraising and Volunteer Committee did a great job with the Movie Day. We still need volunteers for May Day between 10 am and 2 pm. Please, pick your time and email us at artsparents@gmail.com with your availability.

Capturing the Council Meeting: February 08, 2010

Dear Parents,

Here are some of the items discussed at our February Council meeting. Please, be advised that this post does not contain all the subjects covered, and this is not our official minutes of the meeting. The minutes of our January 11 meeting are now posted and can be viewed here.

Ms Cohen proposed a commemorative quilt project. The textile wall hanging will be displayed on the wall of the front foyer and all of our students will take part creating this art piece under the direction of  Johanna Masko quilt artist.
We will be calling on parents to come and help sort through fabrics and possibly donate material for this project. Please look for more info from Ms. Cohen to come in the next month or so. This project sounds really exciting, creative and “student driven”.

Noemi Jenei, Manager of Risk Management from the TDSB Noemi Jenei, Manager of Risk Management from the TDSB came and talked to us about insurance and liability issues. If there is one thing you must take away from this presentation and the follow up conversation, it is that parents must check if their Home or Tenant Insurance has liability coverage outside the home. Parents risk being responsible for paying medical costs if their child is found to have willfully acted in a way that harms another student. Also, parents were reminded to consider the Student Accident Insurance that can be purchased through the school for less then $10/year. Please find, Mrs Jenei’s full presentation here. here.

The Volunteer Committee would like to thank all parents who are generously donating their time to various activities.  If you think  you can volunteer for a specific event or you would like to be “on call” with various opportunities to “pick-and-choose”, please let us know by sending an email to artsparents@gmail.com. Even an hour of your time could really make a difference and hopefully give you an opportunity to meet other parents and see what goes on at KKSA.

Health and Safety: Make sure that children wear CSA approved skating helmet for skating!

Musical Mentors are working towards performing together with the choir in June!

Dance-a-thon is this Friday. We are looking for baked goods for the bake sale. Reminder that the TDSB can issue a tax receipt for all donations above $25. Cheques should be written out to the TDSB , and the Memo line should say “KKSA – multimedia lab”. Money raised will help our multimedia lab to purchase digital video cameras as well as digital still cameras, software, etc. Each child will receive a raffle ticket for each $10.00 donation. If your child is not able to submit donations, please contact Principal Helene Pfeiffer directly for raffle tickets. All the kids will be able to enjoy this fun event.

May 6th is the Massey Hall Concert date for our choir. Details to follow from the school.

Susan Meyler has graciously stepped forward to become Vice-Chair for the 2009/2010 School Year. Susan will be the Chair for the 2010/2011 school year.
